The Ministry of Reader is a vital part of the Liturgy. As a Reader, one makes God present to the people at Mass in the Liturgy of the Word. The Reader is responsible for communicating the Living Word, Jesus Christ, to the community gathered in worship. Prayerful preparation is a crucial aspect of this role.
In order to prepare for each reading for which you are scheduled, helpful resources include the Workbook for Lectors, Gospel Readers, and Proclaimers of the Word by Liturgy Training Publications. This workbook includes suggestions for how to read, as well as pronunciations, and a little bit of information about the reading. Copies of this workbook are available for Lectors to pick up in the St. Ann Office.
Another useful resouces is the USCCB Daily Readings, which includes podcasts of the readings for reference:Daily Readings
It is also helpful to look up the reading in the Bible in order to get the context by reading the verses before and after the selected lectionary reading.
If you feel you are being called to become a Reader, please contact Melissa Rhodes via email at [email protected] to schedule training or to further inquire about this Ministry.
