The angel Gabriel was sent from GΘD to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with GΘD. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord GΘD will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of GΘD. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for GΘD.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Although the celebration of Mary’s queenship was officially established by Pope Pius XII in 1954, rest assured, this celebration is firmly rooted in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and would rule forever, and at the Visitation, Elizabeth called Mary “the mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with her Son Jesus, so it’s no real stretch to affirm that her queenship is also a share in the kingship of her Son. Furthermore, we can also show that in the Old Testament the mother of the king had great influence in the royal court. In the 4th century Saint Ephrem referred to Mary as Lady and Queen. Later the Church fathers and doctors continued to use these titles. Hymns of the 11th to the 13th centuries address Mary as queen. The Dominican rosary, the Franciscan crown, as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany, celebrate her queenship. Today’s celebration is therefore the logical conclusion to Mary’s Assumption, and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast.
In his encyclical, To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves this title for four reasons: First, because she is the Mother of GΘD; second, because she is understood to be the New Eve in the Lord’s redemptive work; third, because of her preeminent perfection from the moment of her immaculate conception; and fourth, because of her powerful intercessory prayer on behalf of her children. As Saint Paul reveals in Romans 8:28–30, GΘD has predestined the human race from all eternity to share the image of his Son. All the more was Mary predestined to be the mother of Jesus. As Jesus was to be king of all creation, Mary, in complete dependence on Jesus, was to be queen. All other titles to queenship derive from this eternal intention of GΘD. As Jesus exercised his kingship on earth by serving his Father and his brothers and sisters, so too did Mary exercise her queenship in the same way. And just as the glorified Jesus remains with us as our king until the end of time (Matthew 28:20), so too does Mary, who was assumed into heaven and crowned queen of heaven and earth.

Aunque la celebración de la realeza de María fue establecida oficialmente por el Papa Pío XII en 1954, tenga la seguridad de que esta celebración está firmemente arraigada en las Escrituras. En la Anunciación, Gabriel anunció que el Hijo de María recibiría el trono de David y gobernaría para siempre, y en la Visitación, Isabel llamó a María “la madre de mi Señor”. Como en todos los misterios de la vida de María, ella está estrechamente asociada con su Hijo Jesús, por lo que no es exagerado afirmar que su realeza es también una participación en la realeza de su Hijo. Además, también podemos mostrar que en el Antiguo Testamento la madre del rey tenía una gran influencia en la corte real. En el siglo IV, San Efrén se refirió a María como Señora y Reina. Como revela San Pablo en Romanos 8: 28-30, DIΘS ha predestinado a la raza humana desde toda la eternidad a compartir la imagen de su Hijo. Tanto más María estaba predestinada a ser la madre de Jesús. Creo que estás presente en el Santísimo Sacramento. Te amo por encima de todas las cosas y deseo recibirte en mi alma.
