Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
“I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.”

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will last.
After Judas had abandoned Jesus, the team of twelve apostles was reduced to eleven. It was important to put the full team back together and fill the vacancy, because the number twelve was a significant number. Israel consisted of twelve tribes, and the twelve disciples selected by Jesus were the nucleus of the new Israel, the revived people of GΘD that would consist of Jews and Gentiles. Matthias was the one chosen to replace Judas and to restore the integrity of the original twelve. It was continuity mingled with a slight difference. Whereas the original twelve were chosen by Jesus himself, it was up to the apostles to choose a replacement for Judas, and they understood that it would need to be someone who had witnessed the public ministry of Jesus from the time of his baptism up to his ascension. They nominated two people from among the Lord’s followers and prayed for the Lord to show them which one he had chosen. This is an interesting mixture of human judgment and submission to divine guidance.
The disciples used their judgment and discernment but they also realized that they needed to ask for enlightenment from GΘD. In our own lives we also need both. We have to use our judgment and experience to see what steps to take; and equally, we entrust ourselves to the Lord in prayer. If you need to make an important, life-changing decision in the near future, remember to humbly ask the Lord for wisdom and for the right use of your GΘD-given intellect. He will guide you just like he did the apostles.
ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
O my Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there,
and I unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Como el Padre me ama, así los amo yo. Permanezcan en mi amor. Si cumplen mis mandamientos, permanecen en mi amor; lo mismo que yo cumplo los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanezco en su amor. Les he dicho esto para que mi alegría esté en ustedes y su alegría sea plena.
Este es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado. Nadie tiene amor más grande a sus amigos, que el que da la vida por ellos. Ustedes son mis amigos, si hacen lo que yo les mando. Ya no los llamo siervos, porque el siervo no sabe lo que hace su amo; a ustedes los llamo amigos, porque les he dado a conocer todo lo que le he oído a mi Padre. No son ustedes los que me han elegido, soy yo quien los ha elegido y los ha destinado para que vayan y den fruto y su fruto permanezca, de modo que el Padre les conceda cuanto le pidan en mi nombre. Esto es lo que les mando: que se amen los unos a los otros’’.
HOMILÍA
No fuiste tú quien me eligió, sino yo quien te eligió y te designé para que fueras a dar frutos que durarán. Después de que Judas había abandonado a Jesús, el equipo de doce apóstoles se redujo a once. Era importante reunir al equipo completo y llenar la vacante, porque el número doce era un número significativo. Israel consistía en doce tribus, y los doce discípulos seleccionados por Jesús eran el núcleo del nuevo Israel, el pueblo revivido de DIΘS que consistiría en judíos y gentiles. Matthias fue el elegido para reemplazar a Judas y restaurar la integridad de los doce originales. Fue la continuidad mezclada con una ligera diferencia. Mientras que los doce originales fueron elegidos por Jesús mismo, correspondía a los apóstoles elegir un reemplazo para Judas, y entendieron que tendría que ser alguien que hubiera sido testigo del ministerio público de Jesús desde el momento de su bautismo hasta su ascensión. Nominaron a dos personas de entre los seguidores del Señor y oraron para que el Señor les mostrara cuál había elegido. Esta es una mezcla interesante de juicio humano y sumisión a la guía divina. Los discípulos usaron su juicio y discernimiento, pero también se dieron cuenta de que necesitaban pedir la iluminación de DIΘS. En nuestras propias vidas también necesitamos ambos. Tenemos que usar nuestro juicio y experiencia para ver qué pasos tomar; e igualmente, nos confiamos al Señor en oración. Si necesita tomar una decisión importante que cambie su vida en el futuro cercano, recuerde pedirle humildemente al Señor sabiduría y el uso correcto de su intelecto dado por DIΘS. Él te guiará como lo hizo con los apóstoles.

Oh Jesús mío,
creo que estás presente en el Santísimo Sacramento.
