GOSPEL John 17:1-11 Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true GΘD, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.
“I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”
HOMILY
Jesus prayed to his Father, saying, “I pray for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours.”
For the next few days the gospel readings will focus on the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus that we find at the end of his Last Supper Discourse in John’s Gospel. Jesus begins by praying for himself, “Father, glorify your Son”, because he knows that his path to glory will be accomplished only through the scandal of the Cross. Jesus is now ready to return to the Father having finished the work he was given to do here on earth. We all have work to do while on this earth, and we have all been given some share in the Lord’s own life-giving work. Hopefully there will come a day when, like Jesus, we too can turn to GΘD and say, “I have finished the work you gave me to do. Now, take me to yourself.” In the meantime, we strive to be faithful to the Lord’s work, to the mission he has entrusted to us to make him known to others by the way we live our lives. In doing this we are, thankfully, not left to our own devices; the Lord himself works in us and with us. Having prayed for himself, Jesus then prays for us, his disciples, to be his witnesses in the world. He lives forever to intercede for us, so that we may be faithful to the work he has given us. Even when we struggle to pray, we know that the Lord is praying for us, and with us, and in us.
Jesus prayed to his Father, saying, “I pray for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours.”
