The gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against the Church.
Today we honor Peter and Paul, the two great apostles of the Church, and of the city of Rome. Peter’s ministry was the solid rock which gave unity to the Gospel, and Paul’s ministry was to take that Gospel to the far corners of the world. Many throughout history have tried to destroy Christ’s Church. In fact, the effort to destroy the Church is a constant factor in human history since the time of Christ. First, it was the Roman Empire, followed by a series of Muslim empires. In more recent times, Napoleon kidnapped the pope in order to make the Church a part of his empire. The Nazis and Communists targeted the Church in the 20th century. In addition to these attacks from the outside, the forces of evil have ceaselessly tried to undermine the Church from within through heresies, divisions, and corruption. And yet, more than twenty centuries after Jesus made the promise that his Church would stand strong forever and never fail in its mission to roll back the forces of darkness, this persecuted and suffering Church is still alive and still remains the primary moral and spiritual compass of the human race. Jesus guarantees that he will always give life and safety to his Bride, the Church, through the Petrine ministry, even when those who exercise that ministry, the popes, will always be imperfect men. Hoy honramos a Pedro y a Pablo, los dos grandes apóstoles de la Iglesia y de la ciudad de Roma. El ministerio de Pedro fue la roca sólida que dio unidad al Evangelio, y el ministerio de Pablo fue llevar ese Evangelio a los rincones más lejanos del mundo. Muchos a lo largo de la historia han tratado de destruir la Iglesia de Cristo. De hecho, el esfuerzo por destruir la Iglesia es un factor constante en la historia humana desde la época de Cristo.
