TUESDAY of the TENTH WEEK

GOSPEL
Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

HOMILY

Jesus reminds us, “You are the salt of the earth, and the light of the world.”
As Jesus continues to unfold the mysteries of the Kingdom in his Sermon on the Mount, he tells us in today’s installment that we are called and equipped to be salt and light for the world. What this means is that, through the power of the Holy Spirit and filled with his truth and grace, we are to bring zest and meaning to life wherever we go. And yet, Jesus warns us that when salt loses its taste, it becomes utterly useless, which is why he points out that what really gives our life meaning and purpose is our Christian identity and mission. If, through our negligence, we allow our identity and mission to become compromised even a little, we risk losing everything that really matters. Original Sin disrupted GΘD’s plan for this world. Evil, suffering, death—these were never a part of GΘD’s master plan for his children. Jesus came to roll back the darkness of sin and evil when he revealed himself to be the Light of the Word. And because we are his disciples, we, too, share in his light. We receive this divine light—the Light of Christ—at our baptism. That means that we now have the grace, as well as the divine mandate, to shine the light of Christ into a world that is growing darker and darker with each passing day. We cannot afford to become complacent and disinterested bystanders. We are commanded to proclaim Christ to the world.
Jesus reminds us, “You are the salt of the earth, and the light of the world.”

Matthew 5, 13-16
En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Ustedes son la sal de la tierra. Si la sal se vuelve insípida, ¿con qué se le devolverá el sabor? Ya no sirve para nada y se tira a la calle para que la pise la gente. Ustedes son la luz del mundo. No se puede ocultar una ciudad construida en lo alto de un monte; y cuando se enciende una vela, no se esconde debajo de una olla, sino que se pone sobre un candelero, para que alumbre a todos los de la casa. Que de igual manera brille la luz de ustedes ante los hombres, para que viendo las buenas obras que ustedes hacen, den gloria a su Padre, que está en los cielos”.

HOMILÍA

Jesús nos recuerda: “Ustedes son la sal de la tierra y la luz del mundo”.
Mientras Jesús continúa desvelando los misterios del Reino en su Sermón del Monte, nos dice en la entrega de hoy que estamos llamados y equipados para ser sal y luz para el mundo. Lo que esto significa es que, a través del poder del Espíritu Santo y llenos de su verdad y gracia, debemos traer entusiasmo y significado a la vida dondequiera que vayamos. Y, sin embargo, Jesús nos advierte que cuando la sal pierde su sabor, se vuelve completamente inútil, por eso señala que lo que realmente da sentido y propósito a nuestra vida es nuestra identidad y misión cristianas. Si, por nuestra negligencia, permitimos que nuestra identidad y misión se comprometan aunque sea un poco, corremos el riesgo de perder todo lo que realmente importa. El pecado original interrumpió el plan de DIΘS para este mundo. Maldad, sufrimiento, muerte: estos nunca fueron parte del plan maestro de DIΘS para sus hijos. Jesús vino a hacer retroceder las tinieblas del pecado y la maldad cuando se reveló a sí mismo como la Luz de la Palabra. Y como somos sus discípulos, también compartimos su luz. Recibimos esta luz divina, la Luz de Cristo, en nuestro bautismo. Eso significa que ahora tenemos la gracia, así como el mandato divino, de hacer brillar la luz de Cristo en un mundo que se vuelve cada vez más oscuro con cada día que pasa. No podemos permitirnos convertirnos en espectadores complacientes y desinteresados. Se nos ordena proclamar a Cristo al mundo.

Jesús nos recuerda: “Ustedes son la sal de la tierra y la luz del mundo”.
