Matthew 22:1-14
Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables saying, “The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”‘ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Then the king said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

HOMILY

Today the King makes this bold proclamation to all who will listen: Behold, I have prepared my banquet, and everything is ready; come to the feast.

In today’s gospel, we encounter two different groups in the Lord’s parable. First, we see those who were the first to be invited to the wedding feast, which symbolizes GΘD’s eternal kingdom. Sadly for them, however, they were completely clueless to the fact that they were rejecting the greatest gift in all the universe—being with GΘD forever! But then, and to our utter amazement, the parable suddenly takes an unexpected turn as we hear these words from the king: “The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.” In this second group, we find people of all walks of life, both the good and the bad. These are now the ones who are invited to be with GΘD forever. Can you imagine what the Apostles must have thought when they heard this good news? Perhaps they thought something along these lines: “Wow! This is exactly what Jesus did for us. We weren’t part of the smart group. We weren’t GΘD’s ‘first choice’ to be his disciples, but he chose us anyway!” This was at once both a confirmation of their new status and a reminder of their need always to maintain a humble heart. But this good news doesn’t stop with the Apostles, because the Lord has also chosen us, as unworthy and ordinary as we are, to be his modern-day apostles. Although we may not be extraordinary from a human perspective, nonetheless, Jesus wants us to take seriously the invitation we have received from him that allows us to participate in his wedding feast—the kingdom of GΘD. But we must remember that as the Lord’s chosen friends, we are not to be presumptuous, and that the invitation to be a part of his kingdom must not be taken lightly; it must be respected and honored. We must to do our part to be prepared for the feast by our fidelity to daily prayer, the Sacraments of the Church, and service to others. This will ensure that we are well-dressed for the feast.

En aquel tiempo, volvió Jesús a hablar en parábolas a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos del pueblo, diciendo: “El Reino de los cielos es semejante a un rey que preparó un banquete de bodas para su hijo. Mandó a sus criados que llamaran a los invitados, pero éstos no quisieron ir. Envió de nuevo a otros criados que les dijeran: ‘Tengo preparado el banquete; he hecho matar mis terneras y los otros animales gordos; todo está listo. Vengan a la boda’. Pero los invitados no hicieron caso. Uno se fue a su campo, otro a su negocio y los demás se les echaron encima a los criados, los insultaron y los mataron.

Entonces el rey se llenó de cólera y mandó sus tropas, que dieron muerte a aquellos asesinos y prendieron fuego a la ciudad. Luego les dijo a sus criados: ‘La boda está preparada; pero los que habían sido invitados no fueron dignos. Salgan, pues, a los cruces de los caminos y conviden al banquete de bodas a todos los que encuentren’. Los criados salieron a los caminos y reunieron a todos los que encontraron, malos y buenos, y la sala del banquete se llenó de convidados. Cuando el rey entró a saludar a los convidados, vio entre ellos a un hombre que no iba vestido con traje de fiesta y le preguntó: ‘Amigo, ¿cómo has entrado aquí sin traje de fiesta?’ Aquel hombre se quedó callado. Entonces el rey dijo a los criados: ‘Átenlo de pies y manos y arrójenlo fuera, a las tinieblas. Allí será el llanto y la desesperación’. Porque muchos son los llamados y pocos los escogidos”.

HOMILÍA

Hoy el Rey hace esta proclamación audaz a todos los que quieran escuchar: He aquí, he preparado mi banquete y todo está listo; ven a la fiesta.

En el evangelio de hoy, encontramos dos grupos diferentes en la parábola del Señor. Primero, vemos a aquellos que fueron los primeros en ser invitados a la fiesta de bodas, que simboliza el reino eterno de DIΘS. Sin embargo, lamentablemente para ellos, no tenían ni idea del hecho de que estaban rechazando el regalo más grande de todo el universo: ¡estar con DIΘS para siempre! Pero entonces, y para nuestro mayor asombro, la parábola repentinamente da un giro inesperado al escuchar estas palabras del rey: “La fiesta está lista, pero los invitados no eran dignos de venir. Sal, pues, a los caminos principales e invita a la fiesta a quien encuentres”. En este segundo grupo, encontramos personas de todos los ámbitos de la vida, tanto los buenos como los malos. Estos son ahora los que están invitados a estar con DIΘS para siempre. ¿Te imaginas lo que debieron pensar los apóstoles cuando escucharon esta buena noticia? Quizás pensaron en algo como esto: “¡Vaya! Esto es exactamente lo que hizo Jesús por nosotros. No éramos parte del grupo inteligente. No éramos la ‘primera opción’ de DIΘS para ser sus discípulos, ¡pero él nos eligió de todos modos!” Esto fue a la vez una confirmación de su nuevo estatus y un recordatorio de su necesidad de mantener siempre un corazón humilde. Pero esta buena noticia no se detiene con los apóstoles, porque el Señor también nos ha elegido, tan indignos y ordinarios como somos, para ser sus apóstoles de hoy en día. Aunque no seamos extraordinarios desde una perspectiva humana, sin embargo, Jesús quiere que nos tomemos en serio la invitación que hemos recibido de él y que nos permite participar en su fiesta de bodas, el reino de DIΘS. Pero debemos recordar que, como amigos escogidos del Señor, no debemos ser presuntuosos y que la invitación a ser parte de su reino no debe tomarse a la ligera; debe ser respetado y honrado. Debemos hacer nuestra parte para estar preparados para la fiesta por nuestra fidelidad a la oración diaria, los sacramentos de la Iglesia y el servicio a los demás. Esto asegurará que estemos bien vestidos para la fiesta.
