John 19:25-27
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

HOMILY

Mary knows our sorrows and our pains because she too suffered—from Bethlehem to Calvary!

The title, Our Lady of Sorrows, is rightly given to Mary because it helps us to focus on her intense suffering during the Passion and Death of her Son. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux writes, “Truly, O Blessed Mother, a sword has pierced your heart. [Jesus] died in body through a love greater than anyone had known. [Mary] died in spirit through a love unlike any other since his.” If you want to know and love Jesus more, then strive to know and love his mother more. St. Louis de Montfort tells us that “the more a soul is consecrated to Mary, the more it is consecrated to Jesus!” Mary, who is GΘD’s masterpiece of creation, was immaculate in mind, body, and soul from the first moment of her conception. Thus, there was no stain of original sin on her soul, and she was never, at any moment of her life, under the power of Satan. Her will was always in perfect union with GΘD’s will. Contemplating the great compassion of Mary, Pope Saint Pope John Paul II reminds us that she “knows our sorrows and our pains because she too suffered—from Bethlehem to Calvary! Mary is our Spiritual Mother,” he continues, “and the mother always understands her children and consoles them in their troubles.” The reason Mary’s love for us is so great is because her love for GΘD is even greater. And if GΘD was willing to suffer for us out of love, then our Mother is also willing to do the same. After all, those who truly love are also willing to share in the sorrows of their loved ones. But in order for Mary to console her children, she first had to participate in her Son’s Passion and Death. That’s why Mary’s greatest sorrow comes from the pain she must endure from the ingratitude of mankind toward her Son’s great sacrifice. She alone understands completely what Jesus endured for our salvation; she alone realizes the horror of sin and how much even one sin offends GΘD; she alone fully understands that GΘD is the source of all goodness, love, and mercy, and that all the good we do, all the grace we possess, comes solely from GΘD. But for this grace to work effectively in us, we must cooperate with GΘD and his plan for us. Saint Paul reminds us that we cannot be partakers of his glory unless we first become partakers in his suffering (see Romans 8:16-17). Mary is the perfect example of the power of this spiritual truth because her Immaculate Heart has always been one with her Son’s Sacred Heart. This perfect union of their two hearts produces an infinite wellspring of Love.

En aquel tiempo, junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre, la hermana de su madre, María la de Cleofás, y María Magdalena. Al ver a su madre y junto a ella al discípulo que tanto quería, Jesús dijo a su madre: “Mujer, ahí está tu hijo”. Luego dijo al discípulo: “Ahí está tu madre”. Y desde entonces el discípulo se la llevó a vivir con él.

En aquel tiempo, el padre y la madre del niño estaban admirados de las palabras que les decía Simeón. Él los bendijo, y a María, la madre de Jesús, le anunció: “Este niño ha sido puesto para ruina y resurgimiento de muchos en Israel, como signo que provocará contradicción, para que queden al descubierto los pensamientos de todos los corazones. Y a ti, una espada te atravesará el alma”.

María conoce nuestros dolores porque ella también sufrió, ¡desde Belén hasta el Calvario!

El título Nuestra Señora de los Dolores se le da con razón a María porque nos ayuda a enfocarnos en su intenso sufrimiento durante la Pasión y Muerte de su Hijo. San Bernardo de Clairvaux escribe: “En verdad, oh Madre Bendita, una espada ha traspasado tu corazón. [Jesús] murió en cuerpo a través de un amor más grande que nadie había conocido. [María] murió en espíritu a través de un amor como ningún otro desde el suyo”. Si quieres conocer y amar más a Jesús, entonces esfuérzate por conocer y amar más a su madre. San Luis de Montfort nos dice que “¡cuanto más se consagra un alma a María, más se consagra a Jesús!” María, que es la obra maestra de la creación de DIΘS, estaba inmaculada en mente, cuerpo y alma desde el primer momento de su concepción. Por lo tanto, no había mancha de pecado original en su alma, y nunca, en ningún momento de su vida, estuvo bajo el poder de Satanás. Su voluntad siempre estuvo en perfecta unión con la voluntad de DIΘS. Contemplando la gran compasión de María, el Papa San Juan Pablo II nos recuerda que ella “conoce nuestros dolores porque ella también sufrió, ¡desde Belén hasta el Calvario! María es nuestra Madre espiritual”, continúa, “y la madre siempre comprende a sus hijos y los consuela en sus problemas”. La razón por la que el amor de María por nosotros es tan grande es porque su amor por DIΘS es aún mayor. Y si DIΘS estaba dispuesto a sufrir por nosotros por amor, entonces nuestra Madre también está dispuesta a hacer lo mismo. Después de todo, aquellos que aman de verdad también están dispuestos a compartir el dolor de sus seres queridos. Pero para que María pudiera consolar a sus hijos, primero tuvo que participar en la Pasión y Muerte de su Hijo. Es por eso que el mayor dolor de María proviene del dolor que debe soportar por la ingratitud de la humanidad hacia el gran sacrificio de su Hijo. Ella sola comprende completamente lo que Jesús soportó por nuestra salvación; ella es la única que se da cuenta del horror del pecado y de cuánto ofende a DIΘS incluso un solo pecado; ella sola comprende plenamente que DIΘS es la fuente de toda bondad, amor y misericordia, y que todo el bien que hacemos, toda la gracia que poseemos, proviene únicamente de DIΘS. Pero para que esta gracia trabaje efectivamente en nosotros, debemos cooperar con DIΘS y su plan para nosotros. San Pablo nos recuerda que no podemos ser partícipes de su gloria a menos que primero seamos partícipes de su sufrimiento (ver Romanos 8, 16-17). María es el ejemplo perfecto del poder de esta verdad espiritual porque su Inmaculado Corazón siempre ha sido uno con el Sagrado Corazón de su Hijo. Esta unión perfecta de sus dos corazones produce una fuente infinita de Amor.
