Luke 6:39-42
Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

Today’s Gospel helps us to understand an important truth about our flawed human condition. To put it quite bluntly, our limited insight into the lives of other people makes it foolish, even dangerous, to make judgments about them. It’s tempting to think that we always see clearly, whereas those around us are blind. Today Jesus shows us that we are all blind to some degree, and that it is often a case of the blind leading the blind rather than the enlightened leading the blind. Changing the metaphor slightly, Jesus gives us the hilarious image of someone who tries to take a splinter out of another person’s eye while being oblivious to the wooden beam in his own eye. Taking the beam out of your own eye first means being more attentive to your own failings rather than those of others. Often we just don’t see clearly enough to understand what’s really going on in the life of the other person, and so we need to be slow to judge. GΘD, who sees clearly into every human heart, is compassionate and merciful to everyone, and he asks us, his children, to be merciful and compassionate in the same way.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús propuso a sus discípulos este ejemplo: “¿Puede acaso un ciego guiar a otro ciego? ¿No caerán los dos en un hoyo? El discípulo no es superior a su maestro; pero cuando termine su aprendizaje, será como su maestro. ¿Por qué ves la paja en el ojo de tu hermano y no la viga que llevas en el tuyo? ¿Cómo te atreves a decirle a tu hermano: ‘Déjame quitarte la paja que llevas en el ojo’, si no adviertes la viga que llevas en el tuyo? ¡Hipócrita! Saca primero la viga que llevas en tu ojo y entonces podrás ver, para sacar la paja del ojo de tu hermano”.

HOMILÍA

Primero retire la viga de madera de su propio ojo; entonces verá claramente para quitar la astilla en el ojo de su hermano.
El evangelio de hoy nos ayuda a comprender una verdad importante sobre nuestra imperfecta condición humana. Para decirlo sin rodeos, nuestro conocimiento limitado de la vida de otras personas hace que sea tonto, incluso peligroso, emitir juicios sobre ellos. Es tentador pensar que siempre vemos con claridad, mientras que quienes nos rodean son ciegos. Hoy Jesús nos muestra que todos somos ciegos hasta cierto punto, y que a menudo se trata de un ciego guiando a otro ciego en lugar de un iluminado guiando a otro ciego. Cambiando levemente la metáfora, Jesús nos da la divertida imagen de alguien que intenta sacar una astilla del ojo de otra persona sin darse cuenta de la viga de madera en su propio ojo. Primero, quitar el rayo de luz de su propio ojo significa estar más atento a sus propios defectos que a los de los demás. A menudo, simplemente no vemos con suficiente claridad para comprender lo que realmente está sucediendo en la vida de la otra persona, por lo que debemos ser lentos para juzgar. DIΘS, que ve claramente en cada corazón humano, es compasivo y misericordioso con todos, y nos pide a nosotros, sus hijos, que seamos misericordiosos y compasivos de la misma manera.
